Freedom Ride 2015

On August 1, 18 youth and adults will head out of Charlotte for our annual Spirit Safari. This time we’ll be headed south, following the path of the Freedom Riders of the Civil Rights movement. We have been preparing all summer, including watching old footage, participating in the new movement for voting rights and against systemic racism, and hearing some stories from one of the original Freedom Riders, our friend and neighbor Charles Jones.
We have an exciting itinerary planned. Here are some of the highlights:
Aug 1: Atlanta, GA – We will visit the King Center and King National Historic District.
Aug 2: Worship at Ebenezer Baptist Church, and then head to Birmingham, AL. We will visit the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, 16th Street Baptist Church, and Kelly Ingram Park.
August 3: Jackson, MS. We will visit with the Spencer Perkins Center and have a couple hours to chat with Dr. John Perkins, veteran Civil Rights activist and founder of the Christian Community Development Association.
August 4: Selma, AL. We will walk the Edmund Pettus Bridge and spend the afternoon with activist Joanne Bland, a friend of our neighbor Charles Jones.
August 5: Orange Beach, AL. Because everybody deserves a day at the beach.
August 6: Koinonia Farm in Americus, GA. Home of interracial farming community since the 1940s, and birthplace of Habitat for Humanity.
August 7: We’ll return to Charlotte full of the Spirit!
Want to help? Here a few things that will assist us:
  • Gas cards or gift cards for common roadside restaurants. We’ve got 1600 miles to go!
  • Hotel points: We will receive lots of hospitality along the way, but one night will require a hotel. We have a small collection of Hilton points from a board member. More would be an outstanding gift.
  • Extra toiletry packets. The usual stuff, including lotion.
  • Beach towels.
  • Snack foods.
  • Financial contributions also welcome. They will keep us motoring and well-fed. Donate now button is on the right at the top of the page. Checks can be mailed to 2910 Parkway Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28208.
Follow the journey on Facebook and Twitter. We will update regularly.
