It’s that time again – time for Freedom School!!! Summer learning, good books, Harambee, cheers and chants, field trips, afternoon activities, and more!
Children’s Defense Fund Freedom School® programs are summer literacy and character building programs led by college student interns with the purpose of defeating summer learning loss and giving every child an opportunity to succeed. Four consecutive years of data show that approximately 90% off scholars in Charlotte Freedom Schools maintain or gain in their reading ability while participating in the summer program. In addition to strengthening their literacy skills, scholars develop character strengths important for making good life decisions and connect to a broader community that believes in them. This year, there will be 19 Freedom School sites in Charlotte serving a total of 1200 scholars. THANK YOU for inspiring these bright young people with your love of reading.
Whether you want to come on your own or with a friend or group and whether you have a morning, afternoon, or evening to give, there is an opportunity for you!
Please take a look at the volunteer opportunities below and find what works for you! Once you’ve determined how you’d like to volunteer, you may go to the Freedom School Volunteer Sign Up page to create a volunteer profile and sign up for your particular volunteer interest.
